Sunscreen for Kids: Nivea Sun Kids Moisturising Spray SPF 50+

I have been looking for a good sunscreen for my kids. Unfortunately, there's not much choice in drugstores and department stores in our area.

We're two days away from a scheduled family day out in Island Cove so I grabbed a bottle that would be good for the whole family.

What I looked for

I wanted a sunscreen that is mild, water-resistant, non-greasy and protects against UVA and UVB rays. I didn't want the sunscreen to cause breakouts on my daughters' faces (aged 10 and 12) so a good product for sensitive skin is a must.

I was hoping to buy new products from Coppertone like Water Babies Pure and Simple Lotion or Water Babies Foaming Lotion but these were not available. Another good option, the Aveeno Baby Continuous Protection Sunblock Lotion was also not available.

I considered Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock Lotion SPF 50 because a number of reviews recommend the product even for kids' faces. I also found kids products such as Banana Boat Kids, Hawaiian Tropic Kids, Nivea Kids in lotion and spray, and Coppertone Kids Sunblock Lotion .

They are all water-resistant, gentle for sensitive skin and offer broad spectrum protection.

Ingredients I avoided

I don't want sunscreens containing oxybenzone because there were studies that link the ingredient to hormone disruption. Retinyl palmitate was also a no,no as there were studies that show it could cause tumors. Final rulings on these have yet to be issued but as a mother, I don't want to expose my kids to these potentially harmful chemicals.

I ended up buying the Nivea Sun Kids Moisturising Sun Spray SPF 50+ because it does not contain oxybenzone and retinyl palmitate. The label says it has EU-compliant UVA and UVB protection system, is good for children's delicate skin and very water resistant.

I tested the product on my arm as soon as I got home. The lotion is pastel-colored, which my 8-year old son liked.

The downside is it felt greasy. I was hoping that the oily, greasy texture would disappear after a few minutes but my arm still felt greasy hours after application.

Nivea Sun Kids Moisturising Spray SPF 50+ five minutes after application...

... and after an hour
I hope this wouldn't be such a big issue with my kids when we go for a swim this weekend.

Verdict
Kids found the colored lotion spray appealing but I wouldn't recommend it because it is TOO greasy.
